I have never used tapered shims simply on account of that bolt. Too thick of a shim, or too much taper can cause the head of the bolt to not engage far enough into its hole in the pad on the axle housing. And when I say too thick, I mean really anything more than 1/16 inch.

I drove all the way to the other side of Iowa one time to look at a 1961 3/4 ton factory four-wheel-drive Chevy. (Yeah, I like other vintage 4x4 trucks too.) When I got there and drove it I noticed that the front end was doing all kinds of weird things independent of the steering wheel. After stopping, I saw the reason - 3-inch tall spacers between the front springs and axle housing along with shims with way too much taper.

I then headed back the 400 miles to home.
