If you haven't priced gear oil lately, it's really getting expensive per gallon. Full synthetic multigrade GL5 can run you $60 to $100 a gallon. There's GL4, GL5, GL6, etc. ratings, and which one should I use in my diffs, trans, T/C, winch, and steering gear box. Here's a little guidance:
- Those units that have what is referred to as "Yellow Metal," Bronze, brass, copper, you generally want to use GL4, which is lower in PH and acidity that attack these metals.
- GL4 would be used in the diffs (diff case bronze pinion washers, axle bronze bushings), trans both non-syncro and syncro, due to bronze synchronizers and bushing used in the reverse gear, winch (bronze gears/bushing), and steering gear box (steering gear bronze bushings).
- The T/C has no yellow metal so you can use GL4 or 5 whatever else you want to use, EXCEPT Corn Head grease that others have used and damaged their T/C.
- Synthetic oils are different in additives, so you REALLY need to pay attention to what the package says. Some fully protect yellow metal, others don't, and if the packaging doesn't state this, you may want to look at other brands.
The one GL5 that I use is Super Tech SAE 85W/140 sold at Walmart. Super Tech is one of the better oils and as a GL5, it does protect the yellow metals at a reasonable price.
I know we all have our preference in the lubrication we use, but if you're looking for a good dollar value, this is one of the better ones. If you want to read more about it, here is a link:
