My now-departed old mechanic friend's reasoning was that the major damage to the ring gear occurred when the starter motor was activated and the Bendix gear came into contact with the ring gear while in motion. It made sense to me. Over the years the few times I have had occasion to view a ring rear it seemed like there were only about 3 places where the teeth were noticeably damaged, and the rest were like new.
