Hi Clint,
When I install any of the seals on the list, I use some gasket silicone around the side of the seal housing. Once I get the seal started in the retainer, I use a piece of hard wood and hammer and work around the seal to drive it straight and flush with the retainer, I don't drive it any further. This method doesn't distort the seal housing and results in a good seal missing any groove from the old leather seal. You can see an image in section 28, TIPS, "jj" of the PIF.
