Tall narrow intake ports is what LS engines have, may be better for the transition to the round valve? I see no advantage to round or square. Area is the key. 7/8wide by 2"tall = 1 3/4 in/sq. But round is easier to drill. Drill, mill, and lots of inside die grinder w/ ball cutter...
Your front cyl idea may run into interference at ex rocker to intake valve spring. Rockers on a common shaft can have individual off sets,your idea would need individual rocker towers at angles. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. :D
Does the block have a tappet oil galley? Or are hydraulic lifters out?
Whatever we dream up is going to flow better than the OE flattie.
