According to the parts manuals, the very early locking knob and wire throttle control assembly was used on trucks up to serial number 83900466 (Detroit) and 88750029 (LA). the part number for the assembly was 917 248.
This early locking knob and wire assembly was replaced at those serial numbers with the sawtooth ratcheting rod style. The part number for that assembly was 1189 568, and it is indicated as a new number having never been used previously.
The parts manuals from 1951 up thru 1954 all agree with the information above. That the early locking type was used for only a short period of time being replaced with the ratcheting rod style.
In the 1956 parts manual, things start getting interesting with some numbers not shown any longer and no clear indication of what was going on by that time. However, the break at numbers 466 and 029 were still referred to.
In the 1957 parts manual, all reference to the ratcheting rod style is left out, the old number appears good again, but the image shows a new knob for the control (T-type instead of the old round bakelite knob from the early WDX).
The 1957-1958 combination parts book does not even list any hand throttle control components for '57 W300 or the '58 W300M. Same with the 1959 parts list. Not until 1960 did the old number 917 248 reappear again for the W300M.
So, from the manuals, it appears that sometime, maybe starting as early as 1955, the ratcheting rod style throttle control was phased out and replaced again by the old locking style from 1946 - only with a new knob and wire assembly that was treated as a single part.
