As long as the ohms range is the same between the gauge and sender, 12v on a 6v system is ok to use.

I'm not familiar with how well CLR works on light or heavy rust and if it is safe for the OEM coating on the tank. If you are concerned with rust in the tank, I would use gas tank etch/sealer products to eliminate further rusting.
