Marty's procedure is right on the money, basically the same as I do, but with one extra step.
Get yourself a roll of cheap plastic drop cloth, the cheaper the better. After following Marty's instructions, cover the area with the paint stripper with the plastic drop cloth. Let the drop cloth settle right down on the paint stripper. If I have large bubbles of air I push the drop cloth down a little.
Give the chemical plenty of time, even extra time
The paint stripper is not going to hurt the metal.
Pull off the plastic drop and have at it. You will surprised how much paint will stick to the drop cloth when pulled off. Toss the plastic drop cloth, dont reuse it, it has expired chemical all over it.
