I had a electric fuel pump in addition to the mechanical on my Willys wagon with a Chev 283 with a 4 barrel carb. If it sat for a period of time the gas in the carb would evaporate. So before starting it you ran the electric pump to get gas into the carb. If you didn’t use the electric fuel pump, you had to crank for awhile to get gas to the carb. As soon as it started the mechanical pump was all it needed and the electric one was shut off. Occasionally, I ran both when I forgot to switch it off.
