Clint...your story echoes my comments below, about synthetic winch rope.
Somehow these stories always seem to branch out, and you get to hear everyone's similar story.
I have my grandfather's hatchet. I've replaced the handle on it at least three times.
I also have a Snap On 3/8" socket wrench that I bought when I was 12 years old. The gearset in it finally wore out and when the Snap On truck was in town I decided to try out the warranty. The rep handed me a new ratchet without even hesitating. I told him I would rather have mine repaired than replaced. He took the gearset from the new wrench and swapped it into my socket wrench. Ready for another 66 years. :)
