I believe the MU and MU2 drums are the same length, but I could be wrong. What I've seen more often is the passenger side bearing support gets bent over time and causes the clearance. It's cast steel, so it can be straightened in a press. The bearing sometimes gets ovalled out during the process, but a little time with a half round file will fix it.
I have a drum from an MU3 available. I like them because they use a set screw at the bottom of the drum to anchor the cable, rather than the U-bolt on the side, which always seems to mess up the cable wrap.
