On my 6x6 I have the original MU2 drum. I hate the way the U-bolt anchor pushes the cable out of line, so I drilled and tapped a 1/4" hole where the drum meets the flange and then crimped a tag anchor to the cable and bolted it to the drum. It spools on beautifully now with no lumps or voids.
The tag anchor doesn't take any load when winching, it just holds the cable in place so the cable can grip the barrel. That's why Braden requires 5 wraps of cable minimum on the barrel before winching.
