What a mess it made of your engine.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago at Iowa.
Was putting through the fairgrounds and the WDX just quit.
Lucky for me the pin backed out just enough to stop working, but didn't fall out.
Pushed it back in and drove to vintage and R&R the pump.

The original pumps had the pin locked with either, a internal hair pin, or a external circle clip.

Now they just stake the housing on each side to hold it.
After a while the housing bore wears and the pin pushes past the stake.
