the 30s was tough times. also the mopar 6 had more HP than the ford v8. Maybe they didnt want to embarrass ford too much with an even more powerful straight 8. ;/). Also that generation was frugal. in 1959 dodge trucks with flatheads outsold the V8 trucks 3 to 1. by the late 60s and 70s probably went the other way, 6 cylinders became the rare power plant
