The shift tower is a fairly simple assembly, no bushings in it. Shift rails/balls could have grooves worn in them, but it would have to be significant to cause any issues, I don't believe they are the issue. Forks, and reverse rail end are hard material not likely to cause issues unless broken pieces. A worn shift lever and loose guide pin are more likely the cause for getting stuck between gears. The chirping you hear is probably caused by a worn cluster gear, shaft, main drive gear and main shaft bearing areas.

Spur gears work well at lower speeds, but the faster you go they tend to vibrate and vibrate more as speed increases. The wear limit for cluster gear an shaft is 0.002 each and when it gets beyond that they begin knocking, worse with wear. You'll need to completely disassemble the tranny and check each part for wear. The PIF transmission section has the civilian trucks that used that transmission in case your interested in looking for parts you can't find from a supplier.

The next option is to install a 3/4 ton tranny if it will work. Those are available NOS and complete with shift cover.
