I would agree the cover needs rebuilt, if you inspected the top and didn't find any obvious broken pieces, or excessively worn fork sides, then it's probably a lever and pin issue when trying to select gears. The chirping could be from gears hitting and it also can be from a bad drive gear bearing, fatigued clutch disk, you may want to disassemble those also.
