In 1980 Mt. St. Helens erupted and sent ash for thousands of miles. Four months later some friends of ours came to visit from Florida. They got off the plane wearing goose down jackets, and wearing masks, for fear of inhaling some 4 month old ash.
Their two kids were around 8-10 years old. They were so sheltered and over-protected by the parents that they weren't even allowed to climb the trees in our back yard, and the poor kids had to wear their masks while they were outside.
