To further, piston ring technology has improved so much in 60-70 years since these engines were new.

I don't even think 4 rings is even required anymore, at least, not in these engines to begin with, especially with today's piston rings available. They are made with alloys that were not available in say 1949 or even 1968!

Egge only sells the three ring pistons now for these engines because of this change in technology.
