I tend to agree with you Bruce.
After pondering it for the weekend, these are my thoughts...
So originally these engines had cast iron rings in both the third & fourth groove. So, the bottom line is the 3 piece ring was added because the ring manufacturers deemed the 3 piece ring a more effective combo. So...my thought is it can go in either location & I tend to agree that the 3 piece ring removes the oil from the walls faster. As far as 3rd or 4th groove...I don’t think it would make a big difference but I’d love to talk to a tech that has credentials other than telephone guy lol.
See most guys aren’t even familiar with 4 ring pistons so really, the question I have for Hastings is, why is the position of the oil rings not identified in the instruction sheet yet the position of the compression rings is boldly printed??
