I have a 1962 WM300 with 251, 4.89s, and 9.00-16s. I've driven it this way for 25 years, and it's a great setup. I never drove the truck on the road with 5.83s, so I can't compare, but here's what I do know:
- I start out in second gear unless I have a heavy load in the back.
- I can take most hills in 4th gear except for Boulder Canyon, where I have to shift into third once the grade is above 7-8%.
- I cruise at about 55mph at 2500rpm, and I can take it up to 65mph if I need to, but I never need to.
- I think you will love the new gears.
