If the "S" is a piece of thin gauge metal with the top and bottom of the "S" bent at +/- 90* with a slight curve that fits snug into the tube with the plate, and has a 1/4 20 threaded rod on it. It should be secured as high inside the top of the tube as possible, then you can secure the bowl and cover. (Silver Solder, braze or tack it in place, mine are secured from the factory)
