Sure you can. Leave the alternator post, go directly to the post on the left side of the meter ( discharge side). The other post goes to battery. Use heavy 10 gauge wire. Buy a 60 amp meter, no a 30 or 20. This wont indicate a tiny charge very well, you wont see the needle move much, but you wont peg the needle when first starting up.

Make sure you are not feeding the entire positive battery circuit thru the ammeter, only the charging system.

I prefer an ammeter over a voltmeter because Im old school, but having both ammeter and voltmeter is best.
