That white exciter wire is only to get a new alternator a jolt to get the windings magnetized, thereafter the regulator keeps things controlled. An old/rebuilt alternator has enough residual magnetism to get it self started, though it may take a few seconds to get going.

Or what the factory did was use a light bulb for a resistor- it's called an idiot light, the red light on the dash that says "chg". One side goes to ign on the switch, other to alt. Once the alt puts out, the bulb has + to both sides and goes off. Simple.
