my ambulance spring had no groove. the only time I have seen the groove is on the springs Clint Dixon has shown us that were only on some very early WDX trucks. I think the groove springs are a whole other design. the groove would mean less friction for a better ride.
I wrote a long post about wrapped springs and how they are maintenanced. if you search jiggle jack in archives you might find it
