Definitely better than just automatically junking a "dead" battery without even trying. But there's still no substitute for "doctoring" a battery like they did in the '20s and '30s -- giving it an equalizing charge, checking with a hydrometer, adding water and possibly acid if needed.

Time is your friend with battery charging as well. Unless you have to get the truck going right away, a nice easy 5 amp charge is better than a "quick charge" because it rebuilds the plates more evenly and densely. To that end, if you're in no hurry at all, a float charger is good even on a discharged battery.
