You are right about all of that. I know of way too many young men who want to give up working and suck off the system. They find a job, work for a few weeks, then get "injured" and collect worker's comp and unemployment. I remember when we first moved to Idaho I was self employed, so none of those benefits, and the state didn't even have food stamps for those out of work. People had to fend for themselves or help one another out when work was down...which was about 8 months out of the year.
My former partner and I used to go up with both of our trucks and cut 2 loads of wood, split it and load it, haul it home, put it away, then go get another 2 more after lunch. It was hard work, but the wood was more plentiful. Today the wood cutters have to really work to get it and you don't want to ask where they get it...that might be another story.
