starter install problem

I am installing the starter. This is the same starter that turned the engine over when I first got the truck. I have replaced the engine but the bell housing, flywheel, etc is the same. It doesn't want to go in the last 1/8 inch, where the centering step on the starter is. Not sure what is going on. The whole mess was caked in mud/grease when I took it apart but assume all fit well since it turned over the engine. 230 flathead with 6V foot starter. suggestion on what to look for? I am hoping to start this engine after Christmas. thanks
