Do you have the lever all the way forward and is the pinion gear fully retracted?

I don't think anything on the front of the starter contacts anything unless the pinion is not fully retracted.

If that's not the problem, you likely have some major alignment problem with the flywheel/bell housing/starter.

Have you tried removing the flywheel cover and looking at the snout of the starter? There should be about 3/8" inch clearance at the front of the snout and about 1/8" on the side. The starter snout should be clear of the bell housing and the pinion clear of the flywheel.

Don't assume just because the starter was working in the situation that you describe, that it's the right starter. It may have been shimmed or other wise jerry rigged. Maybe, try another starter before you start making any serious changes?
