1/4 inch are plenty strong enough, use grade 8. If you notice, the clutch dogs are angled to lock in the drum socket. After a pull, back your cable off to give slack and slightly turn the drum by hand to disengage the clutch before using the fork to prevent breaking the fork and bolts over time.
