77 power wagon half ton 4by4

I would like to refresh fact.318 c.i. 4 spd. drivetrain for more power & torque. is it worth working with what I have or should I look for larger c.i. engine & tranny from other Dodge. I am mechanically inclined & have some funds, 3-4K. Anyone have any suggestions? I am an excited new owner of this Power Wagon & cant wait to be part of this forum.
