Tach/Dwell Meters

I'm having trouble getting my tach/dwell meter to work properly with my '49 civilian (6 volt positive ground). I could be my meter since it's an old Sears unit I've had forever and haven't used it in a very long time. What meters do you guys use, and how do you hook it up to read the dwell on a positive ground system?
