If it's like most such meters, polarity and voltage matter. The cheaper older ones use a very simple circuit in which the accuracy depends on the battery voltage being correct. If a 12 volt model reads anything at all on 6 volts, it will be completely inaccurate. I would be amazed if anyone is even making a 6 volt positive-ground tach/dwell meter. If I needed to work on such a system, I'd get one of the cheap analog meters, take it apart, trace out the circuit and modify it for inverse polarity and lower voltage. That's more than I could explain here, but would be pretty easy to do.

But more likely, what I'd do if I had to work on such a truck is set the points to .020 (or the thickness of a matchbook cover) and assume that makes the dwell close enough, and not really worry much about RPMs. If I really wanted to know how slow it was idling or something, I'd use the strobotach, which works on any rotating machine. Or if I really wanted to be fancy and accurate, I'd hook my HP frequency counter up to the points and convert Hz to RPMs
