my father had a friend that was a very talented mechanic, like you and your boys. he had done and could do any repair. he even once dropped a pan and pulled the head on one of our truck engines, pulled a bad piston and connecting rod and reassembled it on the side of the road. got the truck home on 5 cylinders. saved a tow, proved he was the best. as he got older, he started to refuse jobs he knew that he could do and stuck with things that were enjoyable and profitable. he ended up doing mostly brake jobs, springs, suspension, u-joints and muffler work. all were made easier with his skilled torch hand. he could cut the outside pipe of a muffler and leave the inner pipe untouched. he would use his torch to cut coil springs (no need for a spring compressor), he would cut out old u joints, why press them when they will be replaced. it was cool watching him and he always had work. did a lot of taxi work and took a lot of cash payments in installments.
