Performance mods for the chrysler L-heads are, as you know, limited. So maybe making a list of all the things that would increase the efficiency and hp would help you decide whom has the better performance items.
Since you are most likely not going to be entering a tractor pull and only want the 230 to be all it can be, while still retaining reliability and longevity, maybe, basic and cost effective mods would be the route to take. Electronic drop-in point conversions, more free flowing intake and exhaust using purhaps a dual carb setup and headers, a mild performance cam .Summit or Jeggs performance catalogs offer additional items that can retrieve lost hp such as eliminating the original radiator fan, and replacing it with a high CFM electric radiator fan. Check out the dfferent electric waterpumps available and are now for everyday use and no longer ,just for racing only. If you do not yet have a VPW 2001 catalog, I'd try to get one. On pg 37 they offer, High Performance Flathead Speed Equipment, headers ,dual carb intake manifold, dual carb linkage, HiPo camshaft & valvesprings, SS exhaust valves and seats. You should at least be able to retrieve 5-10hp from the electric fan and waterpump conversion. Ahhh! how nice it would be, to be able to afford a dyno test on a stock flathead just to see what it puts out and then add these upgrades one by one, testing after each to see what gives the greatest performance increase in torque and hp.Best of luck with your flathead.
