While I have not experienced this with my M37, I have heard that some M37 oil pans are a tad close to the crank in one spot and can brush it while running. It would make sense that at idle it would be a tick and when really spinning sound like a knock. I would have someone underneath it with a stethoscope to get an idea where it is hitting. Apparently the cure is to drop the pan and see where it has scrubbed and pound it out a bit for clearance.
