M37 engine Help please!

Ok here is the issue,
I was talking to my friend who is restoring an M37, a 65 i think he said.
1st question:
What engine would have been original? he thought it was a 230 like the civilian PW but I thought that it would have been a 251 especially in that year.

2nd question:
he bought an already rebuilt engine, looked good in and out pulled pans and everything before he bought it.
once he got it in and running it runs smooth at idle but he noticed a small ticking sound at idle. Then as he brings the revs up the tick turns into a significant knock. then quiets down to a tick if you let off the throttle.

we have not opened it up to look again but we were thinking (wrist pin? loose connecting rod cap?) not real sure.

What do you guys think?
