First, guys, it's a "DRIVE SHAFT". "Drive LINE" is everything rfom the fan to the road. including engine, transmission, etc. Engine being the "First Member". tra y the "Second member> and next?_______

A "Drive Line Mechanic" works on them all, not just the parts with u-joints on the ends.

But the thought of a drive shaft brake reminds of something from 20 years ago: I had a Command Car on loan to a museum in the desert, about 100 miles from here. They called and said they had REALLY screwed it up. Seems it wouldn't go no mo. Starts, but whenever the clutch is let out, it dies. And worse, when they tried towing it, the drivers side rear wheel turns BACKWARDS !

So next weekend I go out and sure enough, starts, but stalls when clutch is let out. And towing it with a chain, sure enough, drivers side wheel turns backwards. Obvious from the ditch it had dug into the spot they gave up on it. So I asked "whay are ypu using a chain, instead of the winch cable?" Seems they couldn't get the cable loose, it was wound up tight, and they couldn't get the PTO out of 'IN'.

So how did I fix everything?

And back on topic, see the problem with drive shaft brakes, other than 'retarders' used only for braking on hills? You can lock them up, and skid one wheel forward, other wheel has NO braking.
