20+ years ago, I worked for an industrial repair shop that would occasionally get broken 1-ton full-floating axles in the welding/machine shop. They would use a lathe to clean up the broken spindle and the other side of the broken housing and they would then weld the spindle back onto the housing. I guess they were able to get it aligned properly, as the customers didn't seem to come back with any complaints. I always wondered if the weld repair was as good as the original in terms of strength, though. I'm sure it held up for a while, but I wonder if those would hold up under heavy use for a long time.
