They will "hold up" if done correctly, remember there are all kinds of hamburgers out there that can type much better then they can machine and weld. I have done the repair. you need a long lathe. The axle housing is machined first with a alignment step then the replacement tubing is welded in place.
After cooling it slowly the housing is placed back in the lathe and the spindle is machined out of the replacement tubing to match the other side and the new bearings and seals.
Look at axles and you will see many that are fabricated like the Rockwell with a big weld just outboard of the spring hangars.
