Proper method, keep open hand flat alongside stock. Push clip or follower with right thumb. As bolt is released, allow operating rod 'claw' to push hand forward and up, removing thumb from harm's way. Hand makes a reverse karate chop against the op rod claw. Basically, your little finger slows the action while your thumb exits the war zone.

Best thing about the Garand is the sights. Re-used on the M14. In my younger days, I used my Federal Ordnance M14S to hit a 12" steel disc at 300 meters, standing, with hand loads. But I cheated, I used the 20rd magazine as a palm rest. Late afternoons, east facing range, I could see the bullets copper ass reflecting. I'd see the target fall, and a second later hear the THWACK.

That Fed Ord receiver is a piece of overhardened crap. Mal machined, the barrel was crooked. Made the bolt face crooked to the chamber, so cases tore if reloaded. But it came with an American Sako air gauged barrel. SAK* imprint. Well within 1moa from the bench. But match bullets cost enough, disposing of match grade brass after one shot was toooo much.
