I thought the "M1 thumb" (or "Garand thumb") was from when you need to close the bolt on an empty chamber with no clip installed, so you push down on the magazine spring with your thumb and if you're not careful the bolt will slam forward and hit your thumb. You have to sort of hold the bolt back, push down just the right amount, ease the bolt forward a little way, then get your thumb out of the way and release the bolt. I don't see how anything could hit your thumb during normal firing.

I happen to think the M1 Garand is about the best-looking rifle ever made. I really like the M1 carbines too. You can't beat American walnut and parkerized steel. Just in terms of looks, I don't like a shiny finish, a "camo" finish, or the black "plastic fantastic" guns. I like the ghost ring sight on the Garand too. It's the best iron sight there is, and the easiest to adjust. The only downside of the Garand is it's also probably the heaviest gun that any soldier was ever expected to schlep around with him all the time.
