Extended Pilot bushing?

I am replacing my NP435 with an NP540. The 540 input shaft is shorter and only going to engage the pilot bushing by 3/8" whereas the 435 went into the pilot 1-3/8". Should I get an Extended Pilot bushing? I was told by a tranny guy that the input shaft only needs to engage enough to keep it aligned. Opinions?
