I was trying to illustrate why it would read low on the 6 not high.

I made a mistake (yes no matter what my wife tells you I'm not perfect) in the math though, it hit me as I laid in bed. I multiplied rather than divided. Cam speed vs crank speed, went the wrong way, oh well. So the correct number of pulses for 800 RPM are:

V-8: 3,200 (every revolution you get 4 pulses)
6 Cyl: 2,400 (every revolution you get 3 pulses)

So when the Tach is receiving 3,200 pulses to read 800 on the dial. To create the same 3,200 pulses the 6 cyl would have to be spinning 1,067 RPM.
