That's my thought. I highly doubt the originals were grade 8. The photos show a brittle failure with no elongation, which is typical for a hardened bolt. Without an original metalurgical spec or lab tests, it might be interesting to take an original bolt and see how easy it is to file it compared to a grade 8. I suspect the original will file fairly easily. Grade 8s have their place but they're not automatically better than grade 5 for all applications. There's something to be said for a fastener having some give to it.
Still, to get it to fail, you need a shock load that's much higher than the static load due to tire air pressure. Any sign that it was too loose or was wobbling around, like a egg-shaped hole?
