Copey,

Our log home is also heated by hot water baseboard heat. We have a wood/coal fired boiler and a oil fired boiler as well. We stay on the wood boiler during the day and let the oil boiler come on as needed at night. Do you have wall mounted thermostats in each room? If so, they control the zone valves. I can't believe they would install a heating system that is controlled by manually opening and closing valves. In the type of system most have all the manual valves in the manifold are always wide open. The electric zone valves control the amount of flow on the supply side when the thermostat calls for heat. There should have been a complete installation instruction packet that came with your boiler. I agree that you should contact the installer and have him come back and explain how the system works. We are currently having our oil fired boiler replaced and installing an addtional 3 zones in the basement. Let us know how it turns out.

Brett
