Actually, every Chrysler product, built here and sold overseas (except for Viper) comes with a diesel option. They use the VW TDI 2.0 diesel in the Caliber, Patriot and Compass. I wrote about it a few months back, they get 50 mpg (56 mpg in metric conversion from gallons).
The reason they are not here is the anti progress, environmentalists and lefties from the 12960's that now permeate the EPA and want the death of the internal combustion motor. They have regulated the diesel nearly out of existence and overtaxed the fuel so that it artificially costs more than gasoline.
However technology is winning that battle and a 50 state legal 2.0 will be here no later than the 2010 model year.
Look for small, clean, quiet, fuel efficient diesels to begin capturing the market with a Chrysler fleet average of 35 mpg for diesel motors.
