Before tearing down a transmission, it can usually be trouble-shot with a test drive. Frinstance, a noise that is worse in first, but gets better as you go through the gears, and is gone in 4th, is probably a bearing in the back end. Noise in only one gear, is that gear. Noise that builds through the gears, but is worse in 3rd, but gone in 4th is that intermediate bearing between input and output shafts. See, in 4th gear, the input is locked to the output, no real load on any gears or bearings.

I'd guess that a noise in all gears, worse with road speed, is maybe a bearing in the transfer case. Or maybe the transfer case needs shimming to correct u-joint mis-alignment- that sure quieted mine down..

Can you wobble any transfer case yokes? (bad bearings) and/or do they turn freely- no grinding/rumbling?
