I am shoping for a used tow vehicle for around $15K. I have read all the posts on the Forum Archives about Dodge vs. Ford, low-end vs. high-end torque, driavability, mileage, and personal preference. I'd prefer an extra cab (for the dogs), and a short bed for negotiating tight driveways, parking, etc. I want decent gas mileage on the highway. I do not want to mess with the engine other than possibly a towing chip, air intake and exhaust. It will not be a daily driver.

I have test driven three 1998-2002 Dodge 2500s with 12 and 24-valve Cummins and manual transmissions (one 5spd and two 6spd). Two long beds, one short bed. All were at or near $20K. One had 4:10 gears and a Gear Vendors auxilliary transmission, but the synchonizers were out in third gear. Two had been built up with upgraded computer chips, injectors and pumps, pyrometers, clutch, exhaust etc. and had blown their head gaskets. I liked the 3.55s with 5spd best, but none was in the condition I want for the price.

Tomorrow I am test driving a 2000 Ford F-350 with the 7.3 liter V8 Powerstroke with direct injection, automatic transmission (I believe heavy duty 4 speed with OD), 3.73 gears and trailer brakes in excellent condition. Is anyone towing with this combination? Tim Stienkamp maybe? Others? If so, what kind of loaded and unloaded mileage can I expect? Thanks.
