It weighed too much and it didn't carry enough ammunition. The .308 was also way overpowered for human targets at close range. The choice was made to go to a smaller lighter round because more rounds could be put downrange faster and with more accuracy. The gun was also lighter and this allowed each soldier to carry more gear. Remember in WWII they wore no body armor. Their helmets didn't even stop German pistol rounds. Todays soldier is far better equipped with an M-4 than with the M-14. They can wear body armor and carry far more ammunition. In the rare circumstance where a team of soldiers will consistently take longer range shots (past 400 yards) on lightly armored targets, they are equipped with the M-14 or are in contact with someone who can engage at that range. The M-4 is a superior battle weapon to the M-14, which was superior to the M-1.
