Start simple first:
1. What battery do you have? What does it say on it? 3 caps or 6? Put a voltmeter on it and read it either around12-14 or 6-8volts.
2. To determine pos or neg - Follow the battery leads. If positive goes to engine block, then pos to ground.
3. Look at your dist cap and read it. It may have been 6v and someone converted it to 12v. It would say 12v then.
So if you have a 12V bat and a 12V marked Dist cap, and the positive lead goes to engine block then its 12V pos to ground, otherwise its something other than that.
Start with the simplest things first before you get into polarizing the generator etc.
